Our Story

CACS Student body

The Crispus Attucks Charter School seeks to provide a high school education that leads to a diploma for students ages 17-21. Our staff are dedicated to providing the needed support, tools and resources needed for our students to transition to post-secondary education or job opportunities.

History

The Crispus Attucks Charter School is modeled after the Youth Action Program in East Harlem, New York, which started in 1978 under the leadership of former teacher Dorothy Stoneman. She developed a school and a community improvement project designed and run by young people in partnership with caring adults.

Within five years, more than 250 young people renovated an abandoned four-story apartment building to create housing for homeless youth. This community effort generated interest and momentum, leading Ms. Stoneman to incorporate YouthBuild USA in 1990 as a separate national organization. YouthBuild USA provides training for our staff and students, and ensures that the YouthBuild Coalition impacts national policies affecting young people.

On November 10, 1998, the Crispus Attucks Association submitted the charter school application to the York City School District Board of Directors. We received charter school status approval on May 17, 1999, and officially became an accredited Pennsylvania Charter School.

As a member of the YouthBuild USA Affiliated Network and the AmeriCorps National Service Movement, we provide our students with opportunities to improve the community and the quality of life for fellow York residents. This is achieved by

  • building affordable housing for low income families
  • educating our community about issues affecting them
  • representing YouthBuild in community meetings and making a direct impact in people’s lives
  • providing a direct service to our neighbors by being a positive example to other young people
