Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) participant Easter Brinson is a Georgia native who moved to York to pursue her “calling to help people.” She recently enrolled at Harrisburg Area Community College’s York Campus to study Human Services. “She’s a strong, family-oriented woman that has a smile that radiates and lights up a room,” said SCSEP Director Barry Freeland.
It hasn’t always been easy for Easter to smile. She had to put her own dreams on hold when her grandson Orlando was born. She assumed the parent role and took on a second job to make ends meet. Nothing meant more to her than the title of “Grandma.”
Once Orlando had grown into a young man, he encouraged Easter to go back to school to obtain her General Education Diploma (GED) and further her education. “Never let anyone else tell you that you can’t do it,” he told her, “YOU can do it, and I know you can do it better than anyone else.” Orlando not only inspired her to believe in herself, but he has also been her “cheerleader” along the way.
Easter was delighted to receive the Dean’s Courage Award during the Spring 2019 Awards Ceremony at HACC York Campus. This award is earned when an enrolled student is able to overcome life’s challenges, such as Easter’s, to become successfully enrolled at Harrisburg Area Community College. She gives Orlando all of the credit for her success.
