Like most students who participate in our STEAM Summer Camp, Davon was a typical boy enthusiastic about learning new things this summer. However, his first week was filled with feelings of uncertainty and uneasiness. He was no stranger to summer camps, so it came as a bit of a surprise. After his second week, Davon began to come out of his shell and open up about his past experiences with other summer camps. He explained to staff that his last experience was full of bullying, cliques, and a lack of care or concern from staff and peers.
Davon felt comfortable telling our staff about his negative experiences because this camp was a much more positive experience for him. He said our staff and campers made him feel accepted and welcomed. As a result, he was able to be his “happy-go-lucky” self again. He was always willing to assist with the setup of games and activities. “He greeted everyone with his infectious smile,” said camp director Phil Drayden. “His big smile and silly jokes filled the campers and staff with wonderful memories.”
Our yearly STEAM Summer Camp provides an enjoyable, learning experience for youth to help them stay active and challenged during the summer months to minimize summer learning loss. This year, they enjoyed swimming lessons, bowling, Olympic games, visits to local parks, bus trips to the Benjamin Franklin Museum in Philadelphia and Port Discovery in Baltimore, MD, and so much more!
