86th Annual Meeting

Posted on 22 March 2017 by ca

This past Sunday, our community center gym was alive with chatter and excitement in anticipation of the Crispus Attucks 86th Annual Meeting. Over 100 people from around the area filled the room to hear what we’ve been up to this past year.

Center for Employment & Training Director Rev. Mike Jefferson emcee’d the afternoon and introduced Board of Directors Vice President Darrien Davenport to give the official welcome. Embracing the theme of “Celebrating Our Past, Connecting to our Future,” Jeffrey Kirkland, Crispus Attucks Association friend and history buff, laid out 85 years of our organization’s rich history and deep roots in York.

With an introduction centered around the theme of “bridging the gap” by Judge John Uhler, three local police department heads were each recognized with the Heart of Change Community Service Award for their roles in helping bridge the gap between police and minority communities in York. Springettsbury Township Police Chief Daniel Stump expressed his heartfelt appreciation for the award and his commitment to working with organizations like Crispus Attucks:

“If you have pure motives and a good heart, people will surround you because we all have the hope of having a better community,” Stump said.

Next, Crispus Attucks staff celebrating milestone years of service, ranging from five to 25 years, were recognized for their achievements. Much to her surprise, Deb Kopecki, CA’s HR Director the past 43 years, was also recognized for her many contributions and friendship, an emotional moment for all. Finally, to show our appreciation for some of our dedicated volunteers, we recognized ten more people and groups, including the Country Club of York and Women Living United, for all of their hard work.

We’re certainly grateful for and rely on the support of our community. To another year!

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr Day of ServiceMartin Luther King Jr. Day of Service

The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. federal holiday is a perfect opportunity for Americans to honor Dr. King’s legacy through service. The MLK Day of Service empowers individuals, strengthens communities, bridges barriers, creates solutions to social problems, and moves us closer to Dr. King’s vision of a beloved community. Taking place each year on the third Monday in January, the MLK Day of Service is the only federal holiday observed as a national day of service – a “day on, not a day off.” The Crispus Attucks Association is proud to participate in this event and provide service opportunities to unite individuals and families in bettering the York community.

The Crispus Attucks Association Day of Service starts with breakfast and a program in the Community Center gymnasium at 605 South Duke Street, York, PA, and is followed by community service activities. Interested participants can pre-register for the event and chose their desired service activity.

For the 2018 MLK Day of Service, you can find the list of available service projects here and register for your preferred project here.

The Crispus Attucks Annual Meeting

The third Sunday of every March at 3:00 PM, the Crispus Attucks Association holds its annual meeting to highlight the previous year’s accomplishments. All community members are welcome to attend.  Please join us for the celebration!

United Way Day of Action

The Day of Action is one of the largest one day volunteer projects in York County. The event is hosted by the United Way of York County in June and helps United Way Agencies and volunteers connect and give back. Last year almost 1,000 volunteers helped with projects and donation drives for one giant day of service for our community. Please contact the United Way of York County at 717-843-0957 for more information.

Cultural Thanksgiving Celebration

Each year in November, the Crispus Attucks Rising STARS program hosts a Cultural Thanksgiving Celebration to recognize unsung local heroes and promote cultural and racial diversity. Awardees are nominated by Rising STARs staff and participants for their positive impact in the lives of York youth and their contribution to the success of the Rising STARS after-school program. The celebration takes place in the Community Center gymnasium and includes entertainment, the awards ceremony, and dinner.
