It’s the new year…so that means it’s time to think about those new years’ resolutions to eat better, be more active, and overall more healthy, right? Well, our Early Learning Center and Rising STARS program leaders have jumped on this train of thought in developing monthly activities that incorporate healthy diets, saying “no” to tobacco and drugs, and exercise routines.
On December 27th, Crispus Attucks held its first collaborative event sponsored by Wellspan Health of York, “Go, Slow, Whoa” event. About 65 children and youth from our Early Learning Center and Rising STARS programs participated in activities designed to “empower youth to make healthy food choices.” Wellspan employees introduced them to new and creative methods for eating healthy. After a discussion on “we are what we eat,” youth learned how to make their very own “snack boxes” for breakfast, lunch, after school, or on-the-go. These snack boxes are designed to be an easy way for youth to take control of their eating habits and make good, nutritional choices on their own, such as swapping sugary sweets for whole fruits and nuts, and trading “greasy” potato chips for baked ones. They learned that by supplementing empty calories with nutrient rich ones, they will sustain much more energy and feel better too!
This event was a huge success in helping families realize the importance of eating healthy, and how it can be fun and easy too! Rising STARS Director Phil Drayden is looking forward to continued collaboration with Wellspan Health to facilitate monthly events featuring different “health” themes, such as Family Fitness Night and Say “No” to Tobacco.
Join us for Family Fitness Night on Wednesday, January 23rd from 5:30 – 7 pm at the Crispus Attucks Gymnasium for yoga and exercise class.
