Amber Gets A Second Chance

Amber was a 23-year-old single mother living in York City who had a reputation for having a “bad attitude.” She struggled with getting along with her peers and as a result, made some poor decisions based on her emotions.

Amber realized that she had to make some positive improvements in her own life in order to be a good mom to her beautiful 2-year-old daughter. She decided to enroll in our Crispus Attucks Center for Employment & Training (CET)‘s Youth Employment Services Program, and it was the best decision she could have made.

CET Program Manager Shana Scott helped Amber set some obtainable goals. Amber had an interest in CET’s Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Program. Shana helped her enroll in the program. But, after only a few days, Amber became unreliable and stopped coming to class.

Two years later, Amber came back to CET and approached Shana about re-entering the CNA program. This time, she was committed to completing the 17-day intensive training so she could have a chance of getting a job in a nursing home. Shana sat down with Amber and outlined a personal one-year plan for her to follow.

Not only did Amber successfully obtain her Certified Nursing Assistant Certificate, but she also obtained a full-time position at Country Meadows with her certification. “I am very proud to say that I have seen growth and maturity in her,” Shana said.

Amber has worked hard to be a positive role model for her daughter, and she continues to take this role seriously, challenging herself to succeed even more. She recently decided to enroll at Harrisburg Area Community College in pursuit of expanding her knowledge in the medical field and obtaining a degree as a Medical Assistant.

“The best gift in life is a second chance.” – Shana Scott, Program Manager
