Taking Life in a New Direction

After living in New York for 45 years, Joyce returned to York retiring as an Executive Assistant. Like many retirees, Joyce found herself bored post-retirement. After a couple of years volunteering, she knew she needed to do more, but thought it was too late in life to start something new. She heard about Crispus Attucks York’s Senior Community Service Employment Program, which assists seniors to get back into the workforce.

She worked a few administrative jobs through SCSEP but found her passion when cooking for seniors. Joyce always enjoyed cooking, but needed to find a new way of cooking after she was diagnosed with diabetes. She learned to cook African food, which allows her to enjoy soul food while staying healthy!

Joyce was approached to join the Second Career Service Entrepreneurial project through SCSEP. This project helped Joyce and others not just re-enter the workforce but start their own business!

She is now the proud owner of Groovy’s Healthy Soul Food, LLC. Joyce works with the Community Progress Council, which has a variety of programs helping low-income individuals and households. She helps to serve over 70 kids a week by cooking her delicious soul food.

Joyce says her life is tenfold better because the program has given her ambition again. She’s proud of all her accomplishments and loves to show everyone that she’s still doing things even after retiring. Joyce is finally able to enjoy life again thanks to SCSEP and their entrepreneurial project!
