Black History Month Celebration: Exploring Science, Innovation, and Black Excellence with Ky the Chemist STEAM Sneakerheadz
At Crispus Attucks York, we are always looking for creative ways to make learning fun and relevant. In the Celebration of Black History Month, CAY collaborated with Jakyra Simpson aka Ky the Chemist CEO/Founder of STEAM Sneakerheadz and American Chemical Society Chemistry for Life. This event brought together science, history, and innovation through the lens of something many kids love… sneakers! The program overview: Intro to STEAM Inventors, Chemistry of Foams, Sneaker Insole Design, and Mini Sneaker Keychain Design! This Black Excellence STEAM Sneaker art workshop.
This engaging session reminded students that science is everywhere—even in their favorite pair of kicks! Participants explored the science behind sneakers, learning how materials like foams are designed for maximum performance and comfort. They also discovered the contributions of Black innovators in STEAM, honoring individuals like George Washington Carver, who paved the way for future generations in science and technology.
Beyond history and chemistry, the workshop encouraged students to think about innovation and creativity—showing them how STEAM principles apply to real-world products like sneakers. By blending education with cultural relevance, this experience inspired students to see themselves as future innovators and problem-solvers.
A huge thank you to everyone who joined us for this celebration of learning, history, and fun! If you’re interested in attending future workshops, visit www.kythechemist.com and join the VIP list. Keep exploring, keep innovating, and remember—science is everywhere!
