Building History: A Look at the Crispus Attucks York History & Culture Center’s Modern Exterior
As the construction of the Crispus Attucks York History & Culture Center continues, the community is beginning to catch a glimpse of the striking modern design taking shape—especially with the installation of the building’s distinctive siding system.
This isn’t your typical exterior. The newly installed vertical panel siding features a bold, striped design using a skin tone palette of tan, brown, and copper. These colors not only create a visually dynamic pattern but also pay subtle homage to natural tones often found in African American art and culture—fitting for a center that will celebrate and preserve local Black history.
Behind the colors is a smart and durable system. The panels are part of a metal cladding design, commonly used in modern architecture for its clean lines and long-lasting performance. The visible grid seen in earlier construction phases is part of a rain screen system, which allows the building to “breathe,” improving energy efficiency and protecting the structure from moisture damage.
Each element of this exterior design was chosen with care—not only to stand out but to symbolize strength, resilience, and progress. This new addition to the Crispus Attucks campus will soon be home to exhibits, programming, and community spaces that reflect the powerful legacy of African American history in York.
As the project nears completion, we’re excited to see a space emerging that is both rooted in culture and forward-looking in design. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue building a place where history, heritage, and community thrive.
