Crispus Attucks York Legacy Gala Honors a Legacy of Service and a Vision for the Future
On May 8, 2025, Crispus Attucks York (CAY) welcomed more than 150 supporters to the Country Club of York for its highly anticipated Legacy Gala, an evening dedicated to celebrating 94 years of impact and unveiling the future of CAY History and Culture Center.
An Evening of Inspiration and Celebration
The evening began with a lively cocktail hour and silent auction, where guests mingled, placed bids, and enjoyed complimentary drinks. The program officially began at 7:00 PM with a warm welcome from Gala Co-Chair Tim Tate and CAY Board Member Judy Ritter-Dickson, followed by a blessing and dinner. The energy in the room reflected both reverence for the past and excitement for what lies ahead.
“The second thing that really stood out was, and for those of you who were at the groundbreaking, you might remember if I say, C.A., everybody in the room says, ‘All day!’ Okay, so you got that? When I say, C.A., you say, All day! One more time, C.A.!”
“ALL DAY!”
With that enthusiastic call and response, Timothy R. Tate, P.E., President & CEO of Stwart and Tate Construction, also CAY Legacy Gala Co-Chair and longtime supporter of Crispus Attucks York, kicked off the 2025 Legacy Gala with spirit and pride.
Returning to the podium with a smile, he continued:
“We’d like to first thank our Diamond presenting sponsor, the W. Dale Brougher Foundation, and Platinum Legacy Award presenting sponsor, Randy and Laura Gross. Thank you both so much.”
He also acknowledged the evening’s Gold Sponsors—Glatfelter Insurance, Stewart & Tate Construction, and Wagman Incorporated.
Gratitude to Our Sponsors
The success of the evening would not have been possible without the generous support of our sponsors. Check out the Gala Program!
Tim closed his opening remarks by recognizing the presence of special guests, including York County Commissioner Julie Wheeler and State Representative Carol Hill-Evans, York City Council President, Edquina Washington, Former York City Mayor, Kim Bracey, and former State Legislator Kevin Schreiber. Whose leadership continues to support CAY’s mission in meaningful ways.
Held under the powerful theme, “Molded by History, Changing Our Future,” the Gala served both as a fundraiser and a tribute, raising essential support for the upcoming Crispus Attucks York History and Culture Center—the first and only facility of its kind in York. Proceeds from the evening will directly underwrite programs, exhibits, and educational initiatives within the new 19,000-square-foot space designed to honor the stories of York’s Black community.
A moving presentation about the History and Culture Center was led by Dr. Scott Deisley, Interim Director, who emphasized the Center’s mission to collect, preserve, and share the often-overlooked narratives of York’s Black residents. From immersive exhibits to a rooftop terrace overlooking downtown, the Center promises to be both a sanctuary of remembrance and a catalyst for unity.
Honoring Legacy: George Dotzel
A highlight of the evening was the inaugural Legacy Award presentation, a new annual honor given to an individual who exemplifies the values of Crispus Attucks York through unwavering service, advocacy, and community engagement. The 2025 recipient was George Dotzel, whose family has supported CAY’s mission for years.
As a proud silver sponsor, the Dotzel family expressed their deep gratitude:
“With sincere gratitude to CA for everything they do for so many in the York community.”
A commemorative plaque bearing Mr. Dotzel’s name will be permanently displayed inside the new History and Culture Center, serving as a symbol of his dedication to a more inclusive future.
A highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Legacy Award to George N. Dotzel, III, a longtime friend and champion of Crispus Attucks York. His steadfast support and invaluable guidance have left a lasting mark on our organization’s history.
The inscription on his award reads:

A Daughter’s Tribute:
Sarah Dotzel Honors Her Father, George Dotzel, at the Legacy Gala
“Hi, everyone. My name is Sarah Bond. Excuse me—Dotzel. Sorry, Dad. It’s your party, and I didn’t mean to offend you right off the bat.”
With a laugh and a light-hearted correction, Sarah Dotzel—youngest daughter of Legacy Award Honoree George Dotzel—took the stage at the Crispus Attucks York Legacy Gala with grace, wit, and heartfelt sincerity.
Before diving into praise for her father, Sarah redirected the spotlight to others who helped shape his journey.
“I want to start by hyping up some people who aren’t my dad,” she said with a smile. “In part because it’s extremely well-deserved, and in part because I’m terrified of how big his head’s going to be.”
She offered a heartfelt thank-you to Bobby Simpson and the entire Crispus Attucks York team.

“When my dad walked through the doors of CA 25 years ago to drop off his daughters at swim practice, he had no idea the place would become a second home—and the people, a second family. We can’t thank you enough for welcoming him with open arms and for supporting a cause he’s so incredibly passionate about.”
Then, turning her attention to her father, Sarah shared a glimpse into the man behind the award.
“There’s a lot we could say about that guy,” she joked. “He’s clever. He’s driven. He’s one hell of a dancer. And he’s charismatic beyond measure. But most simply—my dad is someone you want on your team. Because if he’s on your team, that team is going to win every time.”
She spoke of his scrappiness, his shameless relentlessness, and his uncanny ability to make friends wherever he goes.
“Dad, on behalf of my sisters and me—you are truly our hero. We work every single day to try to live up to the legacy you and Mom have given us.”
Choking up with emotion, Sarah smiled through the moment.
“My allergies are really bad,” she joked, holding back tears. “So thank you. And without further ado—let’s raise a glass to my dad, George. Yeah! You made it, George.”
It was a touching moment that perfectly captured the spirit of the evening: a celebration of legacy, community, and the people who dedicate their lives to making a difference.
A One-in-a-Million Legacy: Honoring George Dotzel
Before George Dotzel received his Legacy Award at the Crispus Attucks York Gala, longtime friend Bill Short gave the crowd a story they’ll never forget — a golf tale so improbable, it perfectly captured George’s one-of-a-kind spirit.
Bill described a legendary round where George hit three wildly off-target shots — each landing on the tee of the wronghole. The odds? One in five million. “There’s nobody quite like George,” Bill said, sparking laughter and admiration from the crowd.
It was the perfect tribute to a man whose impact, humor, and heart have made him a true gem in the York community. George Dotzel isn’t just rare — he’s unforgettable.
A Family Tribute to George Dotzel
“I’m Lisa Wagner-Glaze, and tonight, I have the honor of speaking not just for myself, but on behalf of my dad, Rich Wagner.”
Lisa began by sharing her own experience working alongside George Dotzel on the Crispus Attucks Capital Campaign, adding a lighthearted story about how their families scrambled to keep the award a surprise. “Only for you, George,” she smiled.
Though her father couldn’t attend in person, he sent heartfelt remarks to honor George — recalling how his reputation for community service preceded him, joking that George was “like the Energizer Bunny” for his nonstop involvement. Their bond grew stronger through years of annual Colorado elk hunts, where George quickly earned the respect — and playful teasing — of a close-knit group of outdoorsmen.
“George fit in like a glove,” Rich wrote. “I can’t think of anyone more deserving of this recognition.”
A fitting tribute to a man whose impact reaches far beyond boardrooms — into the hearts of families and friends who know him best.
Not Your Average Number-Cruncher: A Tribute to George Dotzel
When you think of a finance guy, you might picture someone stuffy, serious, and maybe even a little boring. But if you know George Dotzel, you know he’s anything but.
A longtime supporter of Crispus Attucks York, George has done far more than just balance budgets. From serving as treasurer for over 15 years to co-chairing the Legacy Fund — which now boasts over $1 million — George’s impact has been deep and lasting.
But he’s also the kind of guy who’ll fly across the country to hunt elk… and then tear up the dance floor at a wedding. Yes, really. According to friends, George was the last one to leave the dance floor — dancing with everyone and lighting up the room with his energy.
George Dotzel is the definition of dedication with a side of fun. Crispus Attucks, and the world, is better because he’s in it. And may God bless you. Thank you.
George Dotzel Honored with Legacy Award: “I’m in Total Shock”
It was a moment filled with surprise, emotion, and deep appreciation as George Dotzel took the stage to accept the Legacy Award at the Crispus Attucks York Legacy Gala. True to form, George began with honesty and humor:
“I’m in total shock right now—to say the least. I’ll be speaking later, and yes, I’ll be asking you for money—but right now? I’m just speechless.”
For someone who’s spent over two decades supporting the mission of Crispus Attucks York, the recognition clearly meant the world.
“This has never happened to me before,” he admitted. “I’ve just been so lucky to get to know the people at Crispus Attucks as well as I have. It all started with Mr. Bobby Simpson, who has taught me so much over the last 25-plus years—and he’s still teaching me.”
Dotzel spoke from the heart about his journey with the organization, beginning when his daughters joined the swim team at Crispus Attucks.
“I walked in that door over 25 years ago when my girls were swimming six days a week. I remember thinking, I’ve got to get involved here. I was blown away by the energy, the people, the mission. I had never seen anything like it.”
Over time, George became not just a supporter but a passionate advocate for Crispus Attucks York and its many life-changing programs.
“There aren’t many organizations in York that have done what they’ve done. It’s not just one program—they have many. And each one is designed to uplift, to educate, and to transform lives. I’ve been blessed to witness their work firsthand.”
As he wrapped up his remarks—still visibly surprised—he offered one more heartfelt thanks to the team behind the evening.
George Dotzel’s impact on Crispus Attucks York spans decades—and this night was a well-deserved celebration of his commitment, leadership, and legacy.
