3rd Annual Veterans Stand Down Brings Community Together in York

Crispus Attucks York proudly hosted the 3rd Annual Veterans Stand Down on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, at WellSpan Park — home of the York Revolution. This annual event is dedicated to supporting at-risk veterans and veterans experiencing homelessness across York County, and this year’s gathering showed once again the power of community in action.

A Strong Turnout

We welcomed 67 veterans, who came to connect with vital resources, enjoy fellowship, and receive the support they deserve. From free hot lunches to showers, hygiene kits, non-perishable food, and health screenings, the Stand Down provided both practical services and encouragement to those who have served our country.

Special Recognition

A highlight of the day was awarding motel stays to Melissa and Damian, offering them not just temporary relief but also a reminder that their community stands with them. These moments of hope and dignity underscore why the Stand Down is such a vital event in York.

Gratitude for Service & Support

We extend heartfelt appreciation to all the organizations, volunteers, and community partners who made the event possible. A special thank you goes to the York City Police officers who supported the event. Given the nearby incident that occurred the same day, their steady presence helped ensure the Stand Down remained a safe, welcoming space for veterans and families.

Barry Freeland on WGAL 8 News

During the event, Barry Freeland, Director of the Employment & Training Center at Crispus Attucks York, joined Gabriel Thomas of WGAL 8 News to share why this work is so important and what’s new this year:

“We have additional resources, again, the emphasis being on mental health issues, PTSD, etc. We have WellSpan Medical Facility, Catalaso Dental and Health Facility, York Benevolent Association has provided a lot of the food bags. We have at least five, six additional resource tables that will be present this year to support our veterans… It’s a conglomerate of a bunch of volunteer entities that really support this effort.”

Freeland also highlighted the generosity of local barbers volunteering free haircuts and the York Revolution providing access to their shower facilities for homeless veterans. As he emphasized, the Stand Down thrives because of the collaboration and dedication of so many in York who step forward to support those who once served us.

Looking Ahead

The Veterans Stand Down is more than a one-day event — it’s part of Crispus Attucks York’s ongoing commitment to honoring and uplifting our local heroes. By working together, we ensure that veterans in York County not only receive essential services but also feel the respect and gratitude they have earned.
