The evening began with a warm welcome and introductory remarks from Board President Vernon Bracey, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance “America the Beautiful.” Mr. Bracey then led the approval of meeting minutes and provided a President’s Report reflecting on the past year’s achievements and future goals.

Financial Strength, Community Focus

Chief Financial Officer Donna Williams and Treasurer George Dotzel presented an impressive financial outlook. With nearly $30 million in total assets and strong financial stewardship, CAY continues to thrive. Their recent audit received an unqualified opinion—an affirmation of transparency and sound management.

Dotzel emphasized, “Crispus Attucks continues to have a strong financial position… accomplished by a very dedicated management team despite inflation and staffing challenges.”

The History and Culture Center: A Story Worth Telling

Interim Director Dr. Scott Deisley offered an exciting update on the CAY History and Culture Center (CAYHCC). Still under construction, the HCC stands as a tribute to CAY’s 93-year journey of resilience, self-reliance, and triumph.

“We have a story, and it’s a great story to tell,” -Dr. Deisley

The center will serve as a space for community healing, education, and cultural celebration, spotlighting the Black experience in York within the broader context of American history.

Economic Empowerment & Financial Literacy

CEO Robert Simpson inspired attendees with a bold, candid message on economic empowerment. Drawing from historical insights and real-world anecdotes, Simpson challenged the community to become investors, not just consumers.

“Spend less and save more,” he urged. “Teach our kids money management from a young age.”- CEO Robert Simpson

That mission is already in action.

Valerie Foreman, Director of the Early Learning Center, shared how even the youngest learners are introduced to financial literacy through engaging, age-appropriate activities. From earning pennies for good behavior to understanding the value of saving, children are building smart money habits from day one.

A Charter School Changing Lives

Crispus Attucks Charter School CEO Jacquie Martino-Miller reminded everyone that CAY isn’t just preparing students for graduation—it’s preparing them for life. With a curriculum rich in financial literacy, leadership development, mental health support, and career pathways, the charter school meets students where they are and empowers them to rise.

“These students are earning diplomas and certifications. This is a hand up, not a handout,” Martino-Miller emphasized.

Keynote Speaker: Inspiring Future Generations

One of the most anticipated moments of the evening was the keynote address by Karen Deborah Smallwood, Principal of Jackson Elementary School K-8 School and a proud York native,. Introduced by Mrs. Jacquie Martino-Miller, Ms. Smallwood delivered a powerful message on the role of community and parental involvement in education. Reflecting on her own upbringing, she underscored that true learning happens both in and outside the classroom—and that CAY has long been the heartbeat of York’s community education.

“Let’s build upon the legacy of those who came before us,” she encouraged. “Together, we can ensure that every child has a chance to succeed.” -Deborah Smallwood

Honoring Dedicated  and Committed Employees:

CAY’s success is built on the dedication of its staff. Robert Simpson and Jacquie Martino-Miller led the Employee Service Recognition, honoring individuals whose hard work has contributed to the organization’s continued success. The mantra “We, not I” echoed throughout the event, affirming that the success of CAY lies in the strength of its people working as one.

We take a moment to express our deepest gratitude to these incredible individuals for their unwavering dedication and years of service. Their hard work, passion, and commitment have made a lasting impact, and we celebrate their milestones with pride!
