JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Community Curator will serve as the champion for the Crisps Attucks History and Culture Center in York, PA building community relations and driving the programming and exhibitions for the center to keep the offerings fresh and attractive for increasing attendance and public interest.
Position Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree preferred
Three years of professional experience in a museum/gallery/library setting,
Community organizing, or other nonprofit setting
Knowledgeof local African American history
Strong interpersonal communication skills
Ability to work both independently and closely with others, including a diverse population Willingness to learn best practices ni collections management and exhibition development Creative thinker
Willingness to work flexible hours
Must have a valid Driver’s License and reliable transportation
Must pass required State Police, Child Abuse, FBICriminal Background Check, and Pre. Employment Exam, including physical, TB test and drug screening.
Bilingual preferred

Responsibilities:
Collaborate with the Director to represent the Culture Center at public events, meetings,
conferences, andother gathering
• Facilitate public listening sessions, focus groups, and other forms of evaluation as the Culture

Center takes shape
Conduct research related to the African American experience in York, PA including oral history
interviews and other community-driven storytelling
nI partnership with community members, colleagues and consultants, create an interpretive plan to inform the Culture Center’s exhibitions now and in the future

• Create a collections plan, proactively search for artifacts to build the Culture Center’s limited collection, and create temporary and long-term exhibitions with artifacts from this collection

Design public programs such as presentations, discussions, performances, and showcases relating to the Center’s exhibitions in partnership with other organizations and individuals in York
Give tours or presentations to visitors, highlighting specific stories or experiences as needed Coordinate an Advisory Committee of industry experts, including facilitating virtual meetings and sharing feedback with Culture Center staff and Board of Crisps Attucks York
Evaluate program offerings and exhibitions ona regular basis through surveys, focus groups, audits, observations, and other visitor studies practices
Stay up-to-date on best practices in the museum field by attending conferences, webinars, and other professional development opportunities
Recruit and train volunteer docents in coordination with Culture Center Director
Manage Culture Center collections in coordination with Culture Center Director Oversee program development in coordination with Culture Center Director
Develop network of support within the African American, York, and Culture Center community in coordination with Culture Center Director
Other duties as required.
Summary:
Abundant energy to drive the development and ideation of exhibitions, programming, collecting initiatives and community engagement. Answer the “what” and the “why” for the Museum and Culture Center through your work as:
Interpreter of stories and histories: What are the key messages, questions and issues that will help make this building the center of the downtown York community and history?
Partner with community: Conducting original research and oral histories, collecting material, reaching out to community resources to help create changing exhibitions.
Activator of ideas: Making the Genealogy Suite a center of community through initiatives,
developing programming with Crisps Attucks York staff, working alongside the Director and staff
to grow the museum/Culture center into a hub by and for the community, supporting grant
writing and funding in initiatives and cultivating relationships alongside the Director.
Partner with other history-oriented centers: to establish a visitor experience that wil attract
tourists to York.
Representative of CAY: In field-wide conversations, with local universities and colleges and
educational organizations, working to position CAY as a thought leader and further amplify its work and Impact.
Reports to CEO of Crispus Attucks York.
Ful time, exempt position. Hours wil vary and include weekends and evenings.
