Director, Crispus Attucks History and Culture Center

The Director will serve as the champion for the Crispus Attucks History and Culture Center in York, PA. The Director will have the overall responsibility to carry out the organization’s mission and policies established by the Board, including the financial, educational, collections, and operations management of the organization.

Position Requirements:

  • Master’s degree in Museum studies, archaeology, anthropology, public history, public administration, historic preservation, architectural history, or related field, and 5+ years of high-level museum management experience. Will consider candidates with Bachelor’s degree if other requirements are met.
  • Community organizing, or other nonprofit setting
  • Knowledge of local African American history
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to work both independently and closely with others, including a diverse population
  • Willingness to learn best practices in collections management and exhibition development
  • Creative thinker
  • Ability to work with the CEO and Board of Directors to establish a clear vision for the Center
  • Willingness to work flexible hours
  • Must have a valid Driver’s License and reliable transportation
  • Must pass required State Police, Child Abuse, FBI Criminal Background Check, and Pre-Employment Exam, including physical, TB test and drug screening.
  • Bilingual preferred

Responsibilities:

  • Represent the History Center at public events, meetings, conferences, and other gatherings.
  • Facilitate public listening sessions, focus groups, and other forms of evaluation as the History Center takes shape.
  • Conduct research related to the African American experience in York, PA including oral history interviews and other community-driven storytelling.
  • Create and maintain standards of excellence for all collections, exhibitions, and education efforts of the Center.
  • Oversee exhibitions to support the mission of the organization to attract audiences, donors and sponsors.
  • Oversee educational programming.
  • Design public programs such as presentations, discussions, performances, and showcases relating to the Center’s exhibitions in partnership with other organizations and individuals in York.
  • Coordinate an Advisory Committee of industry experts, including facilitating virtual meetings and sharing feedback with History Center staff and Board of Crispus Attucks York.
  • Evaluate program offerings and exhibitions on a regular basis through surveys, focus groups, audits, observations, and other visitor studies practices.
  • Stay up-to-date on best practices in the museum field by attending conferences, webinars, and other professional development opportunities
  • Develop network of support within the African American, York, and History Center community
  • Oversee financial management and fundraising duties for the History Cente.
  • In partnership with staff, assist with preparation of grant applications and management of grant projects.
  • Hire, train and supervise all staff and volunteers, including scheduling and annual work goals.
  • Other duties as required.

Reports to CEO of Crispus Attucks York.

Full time, exempt position. Hours will vary and include weekends and evenings.
