group of awardees, MLK vision award recipients

Congratulations to our MLK Vision Awardees

On Monday, January 20, 2020, Crispus Attucks presented several community members with the Crispus Attucks Martin Luther King, Jr. Vision Award; recognizing their exemplary efforts in the community reflecting Dr. King’s legacy through acts of service, social justice, education, and employment.

The following awardees have displayed integrity and courage, and have pursued diversity, inclusion and non-violence with their work:

Zachary Claghorn is a 20-year-old junior at York College studying Political Science. As a member and one of the leaders of York College’s Community Opportunity Scholarship Program, Zach is always willing to help York High School students prepare for college and inspires his peers to give back to the community. He also assists with school concerts and provides drum lessons to the students free of charge. He has even volunteered as the drum line instructor for the marching band this past summer. When he’s not in school, Zach works with the Mayor of York City as a Community Coordinator, where he helps bring neighborhoods and people together, specifically in the Salem Square Area.

Ashley Ruth is a York native who has been actively involved in community enrichment and volunteer programs at Crispus Attucks for the past 20 years. She currently serves on the Crispus Attucks Charter School Board of Trustees and is employed as a Technical Assistance Specialist, specializing in State Grants and Special Programs by the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency in Harrisburg, PA. She has also served as a counselor and adviser to students for several years, putting her Masters of Public Administration from Shippensburg University and B.S. in Behavioral Science from York College to great use.

CASA Youth Group is a group of passionate, community-conscious people working to organize, advocate for, and expand opportunities for Brown and Black youth in Central Pennsylvania. They believe in social justice and their own ability to change their own lives. Last summer, they put together a resolution to commit the City of York to transition into 100% renewable energy. In September, that bill was passed by the City Council unanimously, moving York City towards a greener and cleaner community.

Kyle Hawkins has worked with youth and families in York for over 25 years. After earning his Bachelor of Science Degree from Emmanuel Baptist University, he began working with youth at Crispus Attucks and Lincoln Intermediate Unit. Kyle moved on to become employed at Mission Home Educational and Counseling Services for the next 18 years. He worked his way up the professional ladder, from counselor, director, to CEO of operations. In addition, Kyle has served as deacon is at Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church for the past 26 years. He remains an avid positive resource for many families and youth in York.

Congratulations to all of these deserving awardees for their outstanding dedication to our community!
