Over the past year, the quiet phase of the capital campaign to raise funds for the building has already reached $5.7 million thanks to the generosity of various corporate, foundation, and individual donors, as well as a total of $6 million PA Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RACP) funds. To mark the official beginning of the public phase, CAY held a kickoff event on January 24th, attended by both dignitaries and community members ready and willing to support this historic project. Through this phase of the campaign, CAY’s goal is to raise a total of $150,000.
For over 90 years, Crispus Attucks York (CAY) has led the community in providing social services and wholistic support to help all people learn, work, and thrive. Now, they are expanding their purview to include historical and cultural education through their newest endeavor – the Crispus Attucks History and Culture Center. The 19,450-square-foot award-winning facility, set to open in January 2025 with a construction budget of $12.5 million, will honor, celebrate, preserve, and educate the living history and traditions of African Americans within CAY as well as the greater York community and beyond.
Meet Our Architect
Murphy & Dittenhafer Architects, co-founded by Frank Dittenhafer II, have been recognized for architectural and planning excellence for over twenty-five years. Their proposed design for the Crispus Attucks History and Cultural Center of York County received a 2021 Central PA AIA Excellence in Design Award.
This compelling museum proposal for an urban site grabbed our attention as a new cultural destination for the city. The folded corner of the façade is a strong and striking visual gesture that creates a memorable image for the building. The jury appreciated the skillful way the extensive program fits into a compact footprint. There is a successful integration of diverse materials, including metal panels, which bring texture and character to the interior and exterior of the building. An elegant procession takes the visitor up the main staircase and through a dynamic interior spatial sequence. Skylights at the roof fill the spaces with natural light. Various sizes and shapes of windows allow for unique views from each space back out to the city.
The Crispus Attucks History and Culture Center of York County will be located within Crispus Attucks York’s campus on Boundary Ave, facing the Early Learning Center, and adjacent to the Byrnes Health Education Center.
